Doberman Pinscher - Captain - Large - Adult - Male - Dog
Captain's story, told by his human friend: I have a mixed breed that I can no longer care for, and am in search of a rescue that could take him. I have tried re-homing him twice and have been looking for a new home for over 6 months. Our local shelters will not take him except for euthanasia. More pictures are available here: https://picasaweb.google.com/508311889/Captain02?authuser=0&feat=directlink Captain is a very handsome 2-and-a-half year old Doberman mix. He is a sweet, cuddly boy who loves to interact with people. His family has not been able to get him to live peacefully with their cats, so they are looking for a new home for him with no cats, and where he can be around people most of the time. He would be a great dog for a retiree or someone who works from home. Captain is believed to be a Doberman mix. He is neutered, has all shots, is house-trained and crate-trained, and travels well in the car. He is very smart and energetic, learns quickly and will do anything for food. He is calm indoors and ready to run outside! Captain will fetch a ball all day, and is very good at frisbee. He's great off-leash with other dogs and very patient and tolerant with young children. Captain is learning to walk politely and to stay calm on the leash when he sees other dogs. He is good at basic behaviors in a low-distraction environment, including sit, down, stand, stay/wait, come, and shake. Captain requires a lot of attention and management right now to keep him out of trouble, but he is gradually learning to control his emotions and look to his family for direction. Captain would do best in a family that is committed to positive, reward-based training methods. He responds wonderfully to food and play rewards, praise, and love. Captain is physically strong and healthy at just over 50 pounds, but he is on medication to help him overcome separation anxiety. His family has gradually worked him up to a full day of alone time, but it will take some time to repeat this success in a new environment. He would do best with someone that does not need to leave him for long periods and can let him sleep with them in the same room, because he gets most anxious when people are in the house and he can't get to them. He does well with new people, so he can be left with a friend or dog sitter, or at a daycare facility. His medication is $4/month and he must stay on it until he can be gradually weaned off. Captain is a challenging but very rewarding dog. He would be an excellent companion in the right home. Thanks for your consideration, Tim
